Last year, it saw 3,800 skateboarders, music lovers, and revelers invade 7th & Pine in DTLB to launch into Long Beach’s ultimate summer-long free concert series, the Downtown Long Beach Associates’ (DLBA) Summer and Music (SAM). And this year will prove no different: SAM kick off its eighth season with the return of the all-skateboarding all-rock’n’roll event 720° Pine, coming Saturday, June 25 from 5PM to 10PM on Pine Avenue between 6th & 7th Streets.
With its moniker both honoring the famed Atari arcade game from the 1980s and signaling the approximate location of the venue, 720° Pine will be dedicated to all things about skating. Skateboard culture, particularly in Long Beach, has a rich attachment to music that embraced and helped define the sport—which is specifically why we are garnering some of the best musicians from Long Beach and beyond to bring 720° to musical life.
MAIN STAGE SCHEDULE:
5PM – DJ Tuandigglz
6PM – The Buttertones
7PM – Korey Dane
8PM – Devendra Banhart (DJ set)
9PM – Ray Barbee and the Mattson Two
“The idea behind 720 stems from my own selfish, lifelong dream of being a professional skater,” said SAM Co-Founder Justin Hectus. “I was never good enough or cool enough to make it happen, but skateboarding and Long Beach are connected in a way that always returns to me back to some of my favorite moments growing up.”
720° isn’t just about music that pairs with skateboarding; it is about the famed Atari game. Not only will we have the arcade console 720 Pine itself, we will feature a plethora of other classic arcade games to bring out your inner Pac Man and Mortal Kombat lovers.
And let’s not forget the sport itself. Professional skaters showing off their skill and stunt mastery will shred a skateboarding course that spans nearly a block and mimics the famed Cherry Gap of Long Beach at Bixby Park. Prior to the main event, the SAM skate park will be hosting The A.skate Foundation, a nonprofit that is dedicated to providing children with autism the chance to experience and learn skateboarding.
SKATE PARK SCHEDULE:
2:30PM – Skate park open for A.Skate families
5PM – Pro skate demo
6PM – Open skate
Even more? A beer garden courtesy of Kress Market & Deli and the best food truck grub around thanks to Hang 10 Taco Truck and Green Truck.
