Clarifying what our Downtown is all about, where the landmarks are, and how to move through it are all aspects of Long Beach’s upcoming wayfinding signage project. And it isn’t just about building pretty signs, it’s about analyzing the space and determining the most pertinent information to share that will make a complex space simple to understand.
Over the past year, the DLBA has worked with the City of Long Beach to develop a comprehensive Wayfinding Signage Program that includes major gateway entries, parking wayfinding, Downtown pedestrian wayfinding, and waterfront access. The new signage design reflects the community’s values and identity, and exhibits a cohesive design that in the simplest way, directs residents and visitors to their destination.
“These reimagined gateway signage creates and establishes a true sense of place in Long Beach,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “The new signage will welcome visitors to our City, and promote greater accessibility and safety throughout the community.”
The DLBA recognizes the importance of updating our existing City wayfinding system as we’ve long been advocates for improving pedestrian connectivity within Downtown, particularly between the Downtown Core and the Waterfront; and the East Village and Downtown Core. As such, we’ve funded the design phase of the pedestrian wayfinding system and partnered with the City to ensure new pedestrian signage is consistent with the overall Long Beach wayfinding system.
“Right now, there’s a lack of cohesive signs throughout our Downtown,” said Sean Warner, Placemaking Manager at the DLBA. “We couldn’t be more excited to be on the precipice of the implementation of this new wayfinding system. With more than six million visitors to DTLB each year and pedestrian activity ever-growing, the importance of easily guiding people through our community has become paramount.”
A special meeting of DLBA’s Public Realm Committee will be taking place on Wednesday, April 26 at 5:00 PM at Studio 111 (245 East 3rd St.) where the community will have an opportunity to learn about the DLBA’s Downtown Long Beach Pedestrian Wayfinding Signage Program.
As the project moves into the next phase of design the DLBA is eager for the community’s feedback on locations and messaging for pedestrian signs located in Downtown.
