We Can Do It! a monthly Open Mic, curated and hosted by singer/songwriter/poetess Melissa Lussier.

Monthly on the first Tuesday, with featured guests and slots for traditional open mic.

February Featured Guests:
Popoki House
FlowerPunk

Popoki House
Singer-songwriters Taeri Schiffman and Katie Blanchard are the crazy cat ladies of Popoki House, partners in both life and music who perform the toe-tapping musical melange they call “Hawai’icana,” an acoustic blend of Hawaiian, Americana, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and folk in tie-dye Hawaiian tops!
Popoki House are active members of the Long Beach music and arts scene and an Out and Proud LGBTQ band whose spirited and charming performances will make your feet move and your heart delight, proving it only takes ten strings and two hearts to create beautiful Hawai’icana music!

FlowerPunk
Long Beach-based psychedelic guitar duo FlowerPunk are on a
mission to let the world know just what sexiness sounds like.
Formed in March of 2019 and playing non-stop since, FlowerPunk is comprised of Xavier and Valerie Duran. Both solo artists in the local scene that kept running into each other, they decided to come together to bring a mix of psychedelic/blues/funk/neo-soul with a heavy emphasis on live improvisation so come on down, close your eyes, let the music flow through and have an amazing night.

Melissa Lussier
Singer/songwriter/poetess/bird of paradise. Melissa Lussier hails from rust belt city Buffalo, NY, where the cycle of long cold winters and hopeful Spring buds planted in her resilience and a deep awe of the seasons of the heart. She has been falling in love with Long Beach for the past 3 years and enjoys gently stalking the wild parrots, studying gender politics, and wearing jewel tones. Her music can be best described as bluesy folky sultry indie rock coupled with poetic lyrics, and her powerful voice has been described as “woody” and “primal.” When not performing music or writing poetry, Melissa can be found teaching English, salsa dancing, and cooking up tasty dishes in her kitchen.

Her vision for creating this open mic was to create community, to create a space where people feel seen, heard, and loved, a space where people will return month after month because they feel a part of a movement greater than themselves. She wants this open mic to specifically highlight the voices and experiences of minority groups because in her words “these voices are so often muted in society at large, so it is crucial that we offer a platform and truly receive the truths in this art and these stories.”

If you are interested in performing:
This open mic is about empowerment. It will be a woman-focused, feminist, LGBTQ+ friendly space. We aim to connect and contribute to our community.
