Long Beach, CA (Friday, August 16) – On the heels of a successful Taste of Downtown, Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DTLB Alliance) and District 1 Councilwoman Mary Zendejas are excited to activate the heart of Downtown Long Beach with a series of community-driven events taking over Pine Avenue, between Broadway and 3rd Street, offering residents and visitors an unforgettable experience. From vibrant celebrations to health and wellness fairs, the upcoming 2-week street closure promises to turn our urban center into a lively hub of culture, fitness, and fun.

  • Starting on Aug. 24, LB Living and Be Proud Fest! present a “Big Gay Pine Ave Takeover” from 4-10 PM, Pine Avenue will come alive with pride, celebration, and unity.
  • Following closely, on Aug. 28, the “Pop Sunset: A CommUNITY Wellness & Sustainability Fest” in collaboration with Long Beach Walking Club, will take place from 5-9 PM, focusing on promoting healthy living and well-being in a fun and engaging environment. Attendees can look forward to a variety of health-related activities and resources.
  • On Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, the DTLB Alliance will see the return of two Roller Disco events from 5-9 PM. These evenings promise a retro-inspired experience, where participants can skate the night away to groovy tunes and enjoy drink specials from area businesses.
  • As we transition into September, the excitement continues with LB Living’s “Ascend”, similar to a mini Burning Man, will take place on Sept. 6 from 4-10 PM, a unique event that brings the spirit of the famous desert festival to Downtown.
  • Finally, on Sept. 7, Grey LB’s “Viva Long Beach” will wrap up the Summer on Pine series with a lively celebration from 2-7 PM, showcasing the diverse culture and vibrant spirit of Long Beach in celebration of Latine Heritage Month.

“Our goal with this street closure is to reimagine urban spaces as dynamic places where the community can come together, celebrate, and thrive,” said Austin Metoyer, President and CEO of the DTLB Alliance. “These events not only foster a sense of belonging and unity but also contribute to the economic vitality and cultural richness of our city. We’re excited to see Pine Avenue filled with life and energy.”

District 1 Councilwoman Mary Zendejas also expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming events. “This street closure represents more than just events—they symbolize the strength, diversity, and creativity of our community. I’m thrilled to see our streets transformed into spaces where everyone can come together and celebrate what makes Long Beach so special. This is a wonderful opportunity for residents to connect, for local businesses to thrive, and for our district to shine.”

Street closures like these have been shown to benefit urban centers by encouraging pedestrian activity, supporting local businesses, and enhancing community engagement. By temporarily transforming streets into pedestrian-friendly zones, Downtown Long Beach is paving the way for a more connected community.
