1897LB In The East Village Arts District

When considering names for his East Village shop, owner and Long Beach native Jose Mercado wanted something that spoke of his city but didn’t name it overtly, so he picked 1897 — the year Long Beach was founded! “It’s definitely a conversation starter,” said Mercado.

“What you’re going to purchase at my store, you can’t get at a big retail store. I design all my merchandise,” Mercado continued. “Downtown is made up of lots of entrepreneurs like me, who have a dream. Shop Small Saturday is a great way to put the small business alternative into peoples’ minds.”

1897LB will be offering specials on holiday accessories such as Santa hats and tree ornaments. Mercado’s main focus on Shop Small Saturday will be debuting his new apparel, which reflects his own style and is ideal for repping the City of Long Beach. “My style, a mixture of street art, graffiti, and clean graphic design, embodies everything about Long Beach that I love,” he explained.

1897LB is open Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 6 PM; Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM; Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM; and Monday from 1 to 6 PM. Closed Tuesday.
