The World’s First LGBTQ+ Mariachi Band Performs During Long Beach Pride Weekend At Hotel Maya
August 6, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Following the Long Beach Pride Parade on Sunday, August 6, Hotel Maya will present “Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles,” the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi band during its Pride brunch at the seaside Fuego from 12-3 p.m.
This unique ensemble was created as a safe haven for mariachi musicians who identify as LGBTQ+ to come together and perform traditional Mexican regional music in response to a “machista” and at times, discriminating subculture of the mariachi world.
“We are celebrating Pride and providing a unique mariachi musical experience for our guests and locals while sipping on incredible Fuego margaritas and enjoying the great weather at the water’s edge,” said Greg Guthrie, General Manager at Hotel Maya – a Doubletree by Hilton. “In tradition with the Mayan culture and our ‘Mayapalooza’ celebration, this is another opportunity for us to share the amazing Latin American programs at Hotel Maya.”
Long Beach was named the nation’s #4 destination to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride by Orbitz. Fuego at Hotel Maya is a long time supporter of the LGBTQ+ community in Long Beach and Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles.
“Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles” is part of Hotel Maya’s “Mayapalooza” celebration during 2023 that includes live Mesoamerican dance performances, live animal interactions, art demonstrations, culinary experiences, live music, auto exhibition, interactive storytelling, academic lecture and other exciting events for both kids and adults to enjoy in Fuego or on hotel property.
The music of the ancient Mayan courts is described throughout native and Spanish 16th-century texts and is depicted in the art of the Classic Period (200–900 AD). The Maya played instruments such as trumpets, flutes, whistles, and drums, and used music to accompany funerals, celebrations, and other rituals.
Fuego, the modern, Latin infused indoor-outdoor restaurant, and lounge, offers a unique seaside setting featuring 13-foot-tall glass walls that fully retract with seating on the patio area. Fuego’s stunning open-air views and expansive patio seating include the Pacific Ocean, Long Beach skyline and Queen Mary. Fuego restaurant is open daily from 6am to 10pm Sunday – Thursday and 6am to 11pm Friday & Saturday.
