Censorship in Literature & Art Virtual Event with Gregorio Luke

May 27, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

$25

This presentation will explore the history of censorship in art and literature in honor of the memory of Long Beach City Librarian Blanche Collins. It will include graphic images that may not be suitable for children. A donation of $25 or more per household grants you access to the event. The Long Beach Public Library Foundation invites you to join us in our 25th anniversary year for a live virtual presentation about censorship by celebrated lecturer Gregorio Luke. In 1962, The Last Temptation of Christ by Nikos Kazantzakis was challenged at the Long Beach Public Library. City Librarian Blanche Collins spoke before the City Council about the importance of not censoring the Library’s collection. Library supporters joined her at this meeting and, as a result of their advocacy, the book was not removed from shelves.
