The public is being invited by the Port of Long Beach to learn all about the latest Long Beach icon: the new Gerald Desmond Bridge.
Come Wednesday, May 4, from 7AM to 9AM at the Hyatt Centric in DTLB, the public can get a full run down—from traffic impacts to the engineering behind the achievements—of the new Gerald Desmond Bridge.
One of the largest infrastructure projects currently happening in California, the new bridge comes with a $1.2B price tag and the main hope is for the bridge to be mutually beneficial for trade and commuters alike.
With two 515-foot towers, the bridge will be one of the tallest cable-stayed bridges in the Country while being the first of its kind in the state. The six-lane bridge—three in each direction—will also have a bike path as well as a pedestrian path with observation decks. The world’s largest ships, given the 155- to 205-foot increase in clearance above the channel, will now have access to the Port’s inner harbor.
It will raise the clearance over the channel from 155 feet to 205 feet, allowing the world’s largest ships to enter the Port’s inner harbor. And with three lanes in each direction plus inner and outer safety lanes, it will be wider and better able to serve future traffic volumes. Other features of the new bridge include a bike path, pedestrian path and scenic observation decks.
