LONG BEACH, CA (June 16, 2025) – The Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DTLB Alliance) is excited to announce a Request for Artists Proposals for the DTLB Neighborhood Map Mural Project, a new initiative led by the Placemaking team and the DTLB Alliance Placemaking Committee.
The first mural in the series will debut on North Pine, painted on the side of Planet Fitness at 4th Street and Pine Avenue, and is intended to serve as a colorful visual guide to the neighborhood’s landmarks, personality, and pride. The $9,000 pilot project is part of a broader effort to build stronger neighborhood identities ahead of the 2028 Olympics and foster a sense of local connection across Downtown.
“This mural isn’t just about paint on a wall—it’s about putting our neighborhoods on the map, literally and figuratively,” said Stephanie Gonzalez, Placemaking Manager at the DTLB Alliance. “By celebrating the unique spirit of each part of Downtown, we’re making it easier for people to see themselves here, explore more, and feel proud of the place they call home.”
The mural is the first of a planned seven across DTLB, each aiming to highlight a different neighborhood (such as the Historic East Village, Willmore City, etc.) through visual storytelling. Artists are encouraged to submit their concepts by July 7, 2025, with the final mural to be completed by the end of summer. The design will be selected by local artists and representatives of the Placemaking Committee and downtown stakeholders.
“This kind of neighborhood-focused placemaking helps define the identity of Downtown in a way that’s authentic, welcoming, and people-centered,” said Austin Metoyer, President & CEO of the DTLB Alliance. “The Placemaking Committee’s vision aligns with our overall mission to support creative, community-driven projects that make Downtown feel more connected.”
The Request for Artists (RFA) is available here. Submissions should be emailed to stephanieg@dtlb.org using the specifications outlined in the RFA.
For more information or to submit questions, artists can contact Stephanie Gonzalez at stephanieg@dtlb.org.
