(LONG BEACH, CA – June 12, 2026) The Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DTLB Alliance) is deeply saddened by the passing of Honorary Board Member Don Darnauer, affectionately known throughout the community as “Downtown Don.” A longtime advocate, volunteer, and leader, Darnauer dedicated decades of service to strengthening Downtown Long Beach and helping shape the vibrant, connected community that exists today.
“Don’s impact on Downtown Long Beach cannot be overstated,” said Austin Metoyer, President & CEO of the DTLB Alliance. “His patience, persistence, and unwavering belief in the potential of Downtown helped guide its transformation over the last three decades. Don brought people together, championed neighborhood voices, supported small businesses, and inspired countless others to get involved. We are incredibly grateful for his leadership, friendship, and lasting legacy.”
After retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard and settling in Long Beach in 1978, Darnauer became a driving force behind numerous community organizations and initiatives. His work helped establish neighborhood associations, strengthen connections between residents, businesses, and local government, and foster a renewed sense of pride and momentum throughout Downtown. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, the DTLB Alliance established the Downtown Don Anchor Award in 2023, honoring his enduring commitment to community building and civic engagement.
The DTLB Alliance extends its heartfelt condolences to Don’s wife, Barbi, his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations working to make Downtown Long Beach a thriving place for all.
