Live After 5, the DLBA’s free music series returns on February 9th from 5pm – 11pm with a special Mardi Gras Carnival edition. Curated by Bobby Easton of Long Beach Funk Fest fame the event will take place at the brand-new At The Top on Broadway and Pine.
Bringing the feel of funk, brass and soul that New Orleans is known for, the night will feature live bands, DJs, a parading brass band, Samba dancers, and live painting.
“We’re aiming to activate as much of the space as possible,” said Easton. “Having live painters throughout the event always adds some great interest, and with some of our acts being mobile – you can count on this to be a very lively event.”
At The Top is DTLB’s newest music venue located just above Shannon’s on Pine. Proprietor, Ron Hodges and his son Riley Hodges led an effort to meticulously restore the entire building, all the way down to the 27 beautiful clerestory windows throughout the venue. This edition of Live After 5 will be amongst the first public events in the venue.
Performing at Live After 5: Mardi Gras Carnival Edition will be:
Delta Nove
- Heavy funk, driving percussion, energetic horns, somewhere between Brazilian Carnival and Mardi Gras on board the mothership, this Long Beach local band is “world funk for your earhole.”
The White Blinds
- West coast organ trio. A funky jazz trio centered around a Hammond organ player.
The Sea Funk Brass Band
- A brass band line up playing traditional and nontraditional 2nd Line music. They also combine nontraditional 2nd Line music such as Funk, Rock, and Hip-Hop.
Bate Batuque
- Afro-Brazilian drumming ensemble
Gisella Ferreira and the Samba Soul Dancers
- Brazilian-American performance artist and instructor specializing in: Samba, Afro-Brazilian, Capoeira, Hip- Hop, Burlesque and Brazilian Baile Funk.
And in-between sets dance the night away to music from:
