Austin Metoyer

ABOUT AUSTIN

Austin Metoyer was appointed President and CEO effective September 7, 2022. He joined the Alliance in 2016, most recently serving as Economic Development & Policy Manager overseeing various initiatives and programs that shape public policy, planning, and economic development efforts to improve Downtown’s quality of life and economy. He spearheaded several organizational initiatives including the organization’s Roadmap to Recovery Strategic Plan, a Downtown retail and office recruitment strategy, and completion of the Property-Based Improvement District (PBID) renewal. Before joining the DTLB Alliance, Metoyer served under former Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa’s Office of Economic and Business Policy and the National Foreign Trade Council in Washington, D.C. During his stint there he also served as Senior Project Analyst for Brailsford & Dunlavey, a real estate development planning firm. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in International Business at Long Beach State University and a Master’s in Urban Planning from the University of Southern California.

James Ahumada

ABOUT JAMES

James Ahumada is the Sr. Vice President & Deputy CEO for the Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DTLB Alliance). In this role, Ahumada helps to lead the team in developing long-range plans and implementing the 2022 PBID renewal objectives. Specifically, Ahumada works closely with the managers for Placemaking, Operations and Communications and Marketing to ensure a service-focused, efficient and well-run organization. James has lived in Downtown Long Beach for the last 9 years, having first moved to the city in 2008. James is a proud alum of Long Beach State, is a Long Beach Rotarian and loves to chat about movies. Prior to joining the Downtown Alliance team Ahumada worked as Chief of Staff for former-Mayor Robert Garcia, and prior to that managed a communications and marketing division at Long Beach State. If you really want to get him going on something, just ask him something about Star Wars or Long Beach State University…and you won’t be able to get him to stop. Go Beach!

Jeremy Ancalade

ABOUT JEREMY

Jeremy Ancalade has dedicated his career to the nonprofit sector, working with organizations devoted to service and community building. As Vice President of Finance and Administration, Jeremy oversees the Alliance’s internal business functions, staffing Executive, Governance, Finance and Audit Committees, leading administration, human resources, and finance. In the community, Jeremy serves as Board President for Shanti Orange County, Board Treasurer for ONE Institute, and volunteers with the American Legion’s California Boys and Girls State program. Prior to joining the Alliance , Jeremy served as Laguna Playhouse’s Chief Financial Officer where he navigated the historic, century-old Equity theatre through the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown. Jeremy has also served as Project Angel Food’s Finance Director; General Manager of the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles; and Vice President of Operations for The Trevor Project, where he led national suicide prevention operations and advocated for change during one of the most dynamic times for LGBTQ people in American history. Jeremy holds MBA and MFA degrees from California State University Long Beach, and a BA degree from Loyola University New Orleans. He is a proud Trekkie, ice cream lover, and enjoys really bad reality TV.

Kelsey Mader

ABOUT KELSEY

As the DTLB Alliance General Manager, Kelsey supports the President and CEO while helping to enhance the general administrative functions of the organization. She comes to the organization with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Cal State Fullerton and a professional background in California Storm Water Regulation Policy (yes, it is just as exciting as it sounds). After years of working for the private sector, she is excited to become more involved with the lively community of Downtown Long Beach. In her spare time, you can find her at the beach, hiking, biking, or camping (she went 10 times last year alone!). If she is not doing something outside, she is probably busy spending time with her friends, family or, most importantly, her dog Penny. Be sure to ask her about Penny’s puppy for a good foster pup story!

Koda Strider

ABOUT KODA

Koda Strider supports the General Manager with organization objectives while helping to enhance the general administrative functions of the Alliance. Originating on the East Coast but working hard to make it in sunny California, they bring a solid resume of office management, scheduling, and other work experience as well as a passion for organization and attention to detail that is critical to the needs of a fast-paced office such as the Alliance. They have a strong love of taking visits to the aquarium, making crafts, and rambling about their sweet cats GG and Goblin to anyone who will listen.

Communications & Marketing

Managing a wide range of marketing, communications and promotional activities, the DTLB Alliance Communications & Marketing Department raises awareness, drives consumer spending, and enhances the overall image of Downtown Long Beach.

Asia Morris

ABOUT ASIA

Asia Morris is the Communications & Marketing Manager for the Downtown Long Beach Alliance, coordinating communications across the Alliance’s various platforms and increasing awareness of DTLB as a great business and visitor destination. Born and raised in Long Beach, Asia has strong ties to the city. Her parents are both retired Long Beach educators as well as owned a small business in Belmont Heights. Before landing at the DTLB Alliance, Asia worked as a multimedia reporter and editor for the Long Beach Post, with a concentration on the arts, and most recently as Chief Content Officer for Propel Bikes. After completing her BA in Fine/Studio Art with a Minor in Writing at Scripps College in Claremont, she pursued art, writing and competitive cycling, traveling to Seoul, Barcelona, London, Milan and Brooklyn to race. In her free time Asia enjoys riding bikes and pursuing anything creative, such as painting and drawing. Asia lives in Alamitos Beach with her cat, Orbit.

Amanda Barrera

Amanda Barrera supports the Executive Assistant with organization objectives while helping to enhance the general administrative functions of the organization. She brings a solid resume of office management, scheduling, and other work experience critical to the needs of a fast-paced office such as the DTLB Alliance. When she isn’t biking or walking around Downtown Long Beach, you can find her watching movies at home or sketching with some good music playing.

Stephanie El Tawil

ABOUT STEPHANIE E.

Stephanie El Tawil serves as the Economic Development & Policy Manager for the Downtown Long Beach Alliance. In addition to establishing working relations with Downtown business and property owners, financial institutions, commercial brokers, developers, and local economic development officials, she plays a key role in the implementation of office and retail recruitment strategies, supervising the production of market reports, and supervising the business navigator position to assist small business owners with permitting approvals. Before her arrival to the Alliance, El Tawil’s previous roles included managing career and leadership development programs at the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management, Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville, and Project Manager for the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership. She received her MBA and MA from the University of Southern Indiana. If Stephanie is not out riding her bike or board, she’s watching a murder mystery, singing along to a musical, or traveling/shopping the coastline.

Ariel Meza

ABOUT ARIEL

As a born and raised Long Beach native, Ariel Meza joins the Downtown Long Beach Alliance Economic Development team as the Business Navigator. Her key role is to support and connect with local small businesses located Downtown. She manages and develops productive relationships with diverse Downtown businesses and entrepreneurs. Ariel will provide an understanding of all financial assistance opportunities and technical assistance resources relevant to different types of Downtown businesses. Before joining the Alliance, Ariel was part of the City of Long Beach BizCare Program, a resource hotline for Long Beach small businesses to contact for departmental, City services, and grant opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is a student at Long Beach City College and is currently working to attain her Bachler’s in Business Management. When she is off work, Ariel enjoys visiting different local Poke spots or going on a family outing to the beach when the sun is out.

Community Outreach & Events

Plans signature DTLB Alliance events such as Taste of Downtown, DTLB Art Walk, New Year’s Eve fireworks, and more! The department also represents DTLB Alliance services to various neighborhood groups and associations, working each day to keep Downtown connected.

Justine Nevarez

Community Outreach & Events Manager

ABOUT JUSTINE

Justine Nevarez is the Community Outreach and Events Manager at the Downtown Long Beach Alliance. After relocating from Orange County to Long Beach for college (Go Beach!), she quickly fell in love with the city and made it her home. Nevarez’s career has spanned several industries, but her nearly 10-year stint as Manager and Event Coordinator at L’Opera Ristorante stands out as a major influence. With deep roots in Downtown Long Beach, she’s built strong connections with businesses of all kinds—locally and from afar, thanks to the LB Convention Center—and feels right at home on Pine Avenue. When she’s not working, you’ll find Nevarez biking around town, exploring new travel destinations, indulging in Long Beach’s incredible food scene, soaking up live music, cooking, or spinning records at home with her two adorable kittens, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. Nevarez also proudly serves on the Board of Directors for the Long Beach LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce.

Public Realm promotes a safe, vibrant and beautiful Downtown by developing and supporting programs and policies that foster a transit-, pedestrian-, and bicycle-friendly environment.

Stephanie Gonzalez

ABOUT STEPHANIE

Stephanie Gonzalez serves as the Placemaking Manager for the Downtown Long Beach Alliance. She is passionate about placemaking and cities and wants to help bring life and activity to public spaces within Downtown Long Beach. She graduated from CSULB with a degree in Communication Studies and later attended Arizona State University to study Urban Planning. When she’s not at work, Stephanie loves being outdoors, eating at new restaurants, and spending time with her husband, Adam and their dog, Sonny.

Juan Torres

ABOUT JUAN

Juan C. Torres is the new Operations Manager for Downtown Long Beach Alliance. He will oversee the Downtown PBID Clean & Safe team and third-party contracts. Juan has worked in the non-profit sector for over twenty years addressing gang prevention, graffiti abatement, and community beautification projects throughout Los Angeles County. He worked closely with local school districts, the City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, elected officials, businesses, law enforcement, and residents to address social issues. His relations to Long Beach began while growing up visiting the beach and attending the Queen Mary’s fireworks show on the 4th of July. Juan attended CSULB, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology and a Master’s in Public Administration. GO BEACH! Juan enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He also gives back through volunteering in youth sports and Rotary International.

Sara Payne

ABOUT SARA

As the Block by Block Operations Manager, Sara leads the Clean and Safe Ambassadors known throughout the community as “The Red Shirts.” She works with her team to help ensure that our community stays vibrant and welcoming so that everyone can enjoy and indulge in what our community has to offer. Before joining the Block by Block team, Sara spent 10 years managing in the food service and hospitality industry. She uses her hospitality background to help teach her team to be thoughtful and compassionate while providing even the smallest services for anyone that may need them. Sara has always been passionate about serving the community. Even at a young age she was a Girl Scout and spent a lot of her free time volunteering for many different organizations. She took part in everything from beach clean ups to summer day camps for children with special needs and was always ready to learn more. Sara now spends most of her time with her two children and takes pride in being a boy mom. Soccer, Star Wars, and music are some of her favorite things she shares with her sons. She loves her family, her pets, her community, and looks forward to doing the important work every day.

Steve Salisbury

ABOUT STEVE

As the Clean and Safe PACES Manager for Block by Block, Steve provides guidance and oversight for all special projects’ operations. This includes pressure washing, litter removal, contract services, events, graffiti abatement, landscaping and more. Steve has over 13 years of Managing BID Operations and actually started his career with Block by Block as a Safety Team Lead right here in DTLB. Working in several different BIDs has given Steve the opportunity to experience different communities and create impactful strategies to improve the quality of life for those who live, work or visit DTLB. Steve moved to Long Beach in 2007 and attended CSULB where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Outside of work, Steve enjoys everything outdoors, from camping, hiking and fishing, to scuba diving and surfing. Especially now that his son is a very active toddler, getting outside is a must. Giving back to the community and helping others is embedded in Steve’s core values and he wants everyone to be able enjoy life to the fullest.

ABOUT QUIARA

Quiara Grey serves as the Homeless Outreach Coordinator at the Downtown Long Beach Alliance. She has dedicated her life to the betterment of the community and is excited to bring her passion and knowledge to Downtown Long Beach! Prior to joining the DTLB Alliance, she served the unhoused population in both Orange County and the Inland Empire. She has been diligent in securing stable living in the form of shelter, permanent housing, and reunification for over 300 individuals. Being a resident of Long Beach for two years has shown her the immense support that our unhoused community truly needs. She hopes to revitalize our Downtown, leading with her heart first, to enhance the lives of this vulnerable population while educating our community along the way!

Peter Anagnos

ABOUT PETE

Peter Anagnos is the Assistant Operations Manager for Block By Block. He oversees the night operations for the Clean & Safe team so it runs smoothly. His main objective is to keep the Downtown Long Beach area safe and clean for the business owners, residents as well as the tourists. While providing helpful direction for the street residents. His background in Operations is extensive, over 20 years in commercial and property management. He has a keen eye for detail. He has an extensive background in Mixed Martial Arts which contributes to his work ethic and helps him get the job done.
