Downtown Long Beach will host a massive celebration this New Year’s Eve with two incredible events beginning at 5 p.m. Produced by the Downtown Long Beach Associates, New Year’s Eve in Downtown will begin with a family-friendly event in the Waterfront Amphitheater at Rainbow Harbor with fireworks celebration, followed by a high-energy street party on Pine Avenue with headliner Fitz and the Tantrums. Tickets are now on sale for the Pine Avenue Celebration.

The 2013-2014 fiscal year was the first full year guided by our 2013 Strategic Plan Update. With this expanded vision and new set of guidelines, my colleagues on the Executive Committee and I were able to tackle major issues and projects in our Downtown.

To celebrate National Bike Month and Long Beach’s recent recognition as having the 3rd best bicycle infrastructure in America, the Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) is hosting the 6th Annual Bike Fest, releasing the “Downtown By Bike” urban bike map, and installing “Downtown By Bike” banners along Downtown’s dedicated bike lanes on 3rd and Broadway. Long Beach Bike Fest will take place on Saturday, May 3 from 2:00 – 11:00 P.M. in the East Village Arts District at 1st Street and Linden Avenue. Reflecting the diverse biking community in Long Beach and beyond, a significantly expanded Bike Fest will include a wide range of activities for casual riders to serious competitors.

Grand Prix excitement will race into Downtown Long Beach on Thursday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. for the 14th Annual Thunder Thursday. Produced by the Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA), this free event will offer an action-packed kickoff to Grand Prix weekend that is fun for the whole family and will be fueled with gravity-defying motorcycle stunts, motocross performances, race car displays featuring Pirelli World Challenge Cars, Cadillac Kings Classic Car Display, autograph opportunities and live music. The event will also feature a professional Verizon IndyCar pit stop competition and the Miss Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Pageant. New to this year’s event will be a craft beer garden sponsored by Kress Market.

Taste of Downtown is back in the East Village on March 12 & 13 from 6-10 p.m. The event will take place on 1st Street between Linden and Elm Avenues and feature sample sized portions of signature dishes from 17 Downtown restaurants along with live music performed by The Bordertown Saints. This year’s expanded event will also include an event-wide craft beer garden, live art classes by Brushstrokes and Beverages, and a convenient Bike Valet.

We will be honoring three dedicated leaders in the Downtown community with the Spirit of Downtown Award -- Eric Carr, Downtown resident and former President of the Downtown Residential Council (DRC), Gabe Gordon, owner of Beachwood BBQ and Brewing and Kerstin Kansteiner, owner of Berlin Bistro and Portfolio Coffee House. The event will also feature a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Pine Avenue Improvement Project, live music from Long Beach Caravan Trio and complementary refreshments from North Pine establishments Hamburger Mary’s, Kress Market and Public Beer and Wine.

From January 20 to 26, Downtown Long Beach restaurants will channel their spicy side by incorporating mild, sweet, and even extra spicy peppers into special dishes and drinks. From ghost pepper chili sauce, to jalapeno poppers, to habanero infused tequila cocktails and pepper beer, prepare to take your taste buds to the brink! Pepper Week is also a part of the larger California Restaurant Month initiative—featuring over 30 destinations statewide—put on by Visit California and designed to drive post-holiday travel to the Golden State.

Downtown Long Beach will be filled with music, energy and fun for this year's New Year's Eve celebration! The massive two part celebration will begin with a free family-friendly event from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Waterfront Amphitheatre at Rainbow Harbor followed by a high-energy street party on Pine Avenue from 8:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. This year’s Pine Avenue event will encompass two-square city blocks for a massive outdoor celebration featuring performances by Long Beach Rock'n'Roll Band Rival Sons, and eight piece Southern California band The Mowgli's.

The Fifth Annual Latin American Festival returns to Downtown Long Beach on Saturday, September 7, in a new location. Co-produced by the Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) and Vice Mayor Robert Garcia, the event will take place on Historic Old Pine Avenue at 7th Street from 5pm - 10pm. The evening’s festivities will include live performances from acclaimed bands La Santa Cecilia and Raul Pacheco Y Los Dragones de Cumbia. Numerous vendors selling hand-made clothing and original artwork, a beer and margarita bar provided by Agave’s Kitchen | Tequila, interactive opportunities, health & wellness information and authentic Latin Cuisine will also be featured at the free event.

The Downtown Long Beach Associates is presenting the Promenade Beer & Wine Festival in partnership with Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, District Wine and Wine Down Lounge, on Saturday, September 21 from 5pm -10pm. The event will celebrate the growth of wine bars and craft beer brewed, sold and savored in Long Beach as well as the diverse culinary options available locally. Downtown Long Beach Restaurants are invited to participated by preparing a tasting portion of a signature dish to be paired with a brewery and winery.

Summer And Music (SAM) will include the addition of the ‘Freedom of Funk’ fireworks display to the Long Beach Funk Fest (LBFF) lineup on Saturday, July 6th, at the Downtown Long Beach Promenade (east of Pine Avenue between 1st & 3rd Streets). The fireworks show is presented by Farmers and Merchants Bank and City Place shopping center. While LBFF “Funk of July” is an all-day event (noon-11pm), the fireworks are scheduled to begin at approximately 9:20p.m. and will be incorporated into the evening's final act -- legendary funk artist Shuggie Otis.
