Long Beach Police Department Commander John Benedetti, who oversees the South Division, invites community leaders and concerned citizens to attend a meeting where he will share current crime statistics and discus crime trends, safety tips, and how crime is being addressed in the area. In addition, Gang Detective Sean Magee will give a presentation on graffiti.

On Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., join Charlie Gandy and Livable Communities for an inspirational talk on “place-making” by dynamic speaker and visionary leader of Project for Public Spaces Fred Kent.
In this not-to-be-missed presentation Fred will share his organization’s latest tools and strategies for re-imagining and re-inventing the public space to welcome, include and engage for cities that are more vibrant and economically viable called “Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper” a hyper-local, lower risk and lower cost development framework that is tried and tested; one that capitalizes on the creative energy of the local community to spearhead small-scale interventions that generate new uses and revenue for places in transition.

The DLBA is proud to welcome DG Boxing to Pine Avenue. Anthony Skalberg, a Long Beach native who graduated from Wilson High School, recently opened DG Boxing’s second location at 745 Pine Avenue in Downtown Long Beach. At their Grand Opening on Monday March 5, representatives from Councilmember Robert Garcia’s office and Skalberg will be on hand to provide celebratory remarks. The Grand Opening event will also feature a 15-minute boxing demonstration, BBQ, music, testimonials and more.

On Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 10 a.m. the DLBA’s President and CEO Kraig Kojian, Vice Mayor Dr. Suja Lowenthal, Second District, Councilmember Dr. Robert Garcia, First District, and Martin Howard, Bikeable Communities, officially dedicated the new street banners that celebrate the dedicated bike lanes along Broadway and Third Street.
10,000 Small Businesses is a $500 million, 5-year initiative to unlock the economic growth and job-creation potential of 10,000 small businesses across the United States through greater access to business education, financial capital, and business support services. The Long Beach Community College District has partnered with the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses initiative to help small businesses in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan region to grow and create jobs. Through the support of the Goldman Sachs Foundation, business owners selected to participate in the LBCC 10,000 Small Businesses education program will receive a full scholarship covering tuition and program materials. In addition to the DLBA’s New Year’s Eve celebration which features two massive parties – the free, family-friendly Waterfront event from 5 to 10 p.m., and the ticketed high-energy street party on Pine from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. – there are plenty of ways to get out on Saturday, December 31 and enjoy the season in Downtown Long Beach.
